If you're trying to pay your quarterly tax estimate but the "1040" option isn't available to select, chances are you are attempting to pay Business Taxes.
Quarterly taxes are paid towards your individual taxes, so you'll need to select the Individual Taxes option instead.
Check if you're on the Business Taxes IRS Payment portal
Three ways to check if you're attempting to pay Business Tax instead of Individual Tax:
- Under the IRS logo, the heading you see is "Direct Pay Business."
- On the top right, an "Individual Taxes?" box appears
- In the "Apply Payment To" selection, there is no option for 1040ES (for 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ).
Go to the Individual Taxes IRS payment portal
If you confirmed you were on the Direct Pay Business portal, you'll need to access the Individual Taxes Portal with either of the options below:
- If you're on the Direct Pay Business, in the "Individual Taxes?" box, click on the IRS Direct Pay Individual Payments Portal.
- Go directly to https://directpay.irs.gov/directpay/payment and follow the instructions to pay. If you need help, please see our article for step-by-step instructions: How to pay federal quarterly tax estimates
