What is the tax season kickoff survey?
At Heard, we begin with the Tax Season Kickoff survey to gather information about your unique tax filing needs. In this survey, we'll ask you a few questions to confirm your tax entity type, your 1099-NEC filing requirements, and your specific filing needs for the 2024 tax year. To access the survey, go to Taxes>Annual.
1. Tax entity
First, you’ll need to confirm your tax entity. If your tax entity changed in 2024 and it is not already reflected in Heard, you will be able to let us know here. This is an important step to ensure you file the correct tax forms for your entity.
You’re a sole proprietor if:
- You haven’t formally registered your business as a separate legal entity
- You file your business income and expenses on your personal tax return
You’re an S Corp if:
- You’ve submitted a Form 2553, and it has been accepted by the IRS/state.
- You’ve received a Form CP261
- You’ve filed a 1120-S tax return
If you are Unsure, please select None of the above, or I need help.
2. Request 1099-NEC Filings
Form 1099-NEC is a tax form filed with the IRS to report non-employee compensation.
You only need to file a 1099-NEC in the following situations:
- You paid a contractor a total of at least $600 in 2024.
- You paid them by cash, check, or bank transfer.
- You did not use a payroll provider, such as Gusto, to pay your contractor.
If you do need to file, Heard can create 1099-NECs for your contractors before the filing deadline.
3. File annual taxes with Heard
In the final section of the tax season kickoff, you will answer questions about your business and personal tax needs.

Can Heard file my personal tax return?
Depending on your tax entity, personal income tax filing may be included with your subscription. This includes your spouse’s taxes if you are married and filing jointly.
In the Tax Season Kickoff survey, you will be able to confirm and review if any additional fees apply to file your taxes with Heard. There, you will also have the opportunity to add optional tax advisory services.
What happens after I complete the tax season kickoff survey?
Once you complete the tax season kickoff survey, you'll be on track to submit year-end documents and complete the Tax Checklist. Then, you will be able to communicate directly with the Tax Preparer to finalize your returns.
