Schedule A Itemized Deductions
If you choose to itemize deductions, you will need to use IRS Schedule A (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) to calculate your total deductions. In most cases, your federal income tax will be less if you take the larger of your itemized deductions or your standard deduction.
Schedule A is required in any year you choose to itemize your deductions. The schedule has seven categories of expenses: medical and dental expenses, taxes, interest, gifts to charity, casualty and theft losses, job expenses and certain miscellaneous expenses.
