Overview
Providing receipts (or proof of payments) for your quarterly tax payments is key to good record-keeping and solving any potential inconsistencies with the IRS. Payment receipts can come in a few different forms because the IRS doesn't issue a formal receipt when they've successfully processed your payments. Payments from your bank account made through your online account and IRS Direct Pay immediately appear in your online account.
This guide will show you a few ways to find your past proof of payments for your quarterly tax payments.
1. Your Online Account
If you have an online account, you'll easily see your record of payments.
- Login to your account.
- Under Payments, click View Payment Activity.
- Next, click Processed Payments.
- You'll see a list of your payments that the IRS has processed. Please take a screenshot of the payment record and upload it to your Heard account.
2. Direct Pay Payment Lookup
You can look up your previous payments if you paid your quarterly taxes with Direct Pay. To do so:
- Visit the IRS Direct Pay Payment Lookup.
- Enter the Confirmation Number.
You can find this in the automatic email the IRS sent you confirming your payment submission. The subject line will read, "IRS Direct Pay Confirmation of Scheduled Transaction." - Enter your SSN or your ITIN and click Look Up Payment.
- Once you've inputted those numbers, a record of your payment, including its status, will appear if the numbers are correct. (If you get an error message, you may have made the payment via your online account, which is different than Direct Pay). The page will look like this (only with all the details filled in).
- Take a screenshot of the payment record and upload it to your Heard account.
3. Your Bank Statement
If you struggle to find payment receipts using the above methods, you can always find proof in your bank statements. This may be a little more tedious, but if the IRS successfully processed your payments, you'll find the statement when you made the initial payment.
According to the IRS FAQs:
- Your bank statement will show "IRS USA Tax Payment," "IRS USA Tax Pymt," or something similar as proof of payment.
- If the payment date requested is a weekend or bank holiday, the payment will be withdrawn on the next business day.
Once you've identified the correct statement, you can screenshot it for your records. Please include the quarter and tax year for the payment.
